❥ Folkmore Roles & Attributes

Skills: Piloting planes/spacecraft/mobile suits, driving vehicles, riding horses, fencing, shooting, basic maintenance and care of everything involved in the previous skills, wilderness survival (basics taught at the academy), navigation, leadership, ship operations, infiltration/sabotage, military strategy, tactics, music, debate
Canon Abilities: Newtype abilities!
There are three main areas where Newtypes are different from normal humans:

1) Enhanced spatial awareness/spatial reasoning/cognitive speed: Char has this in spades, and is possibly the most skilled pilot out of all the Newtype pilots. His ability to dodge, weave, and line up shots while moving at extremely high speeds are phenomenal even before he begins to express any other Newtype traits.

2) Precognition: This is the first Newtype ability Char displays, but after the first time he dodges an attack he had no way or reason to expect was coming, it's years before he starts to do so again. He never experiences more than split-second awareness of incoming danger, and attacks that don't threaten to kill/injure him directly appear to not trigger this awareness.

3) Newtype Connection: Of the major Newtype pilots in the gundam series, Char is probably the weakest at the main Newtype abilities. He struggles with the Zeong mobile suit because it was built for a Newtype pilot and he doesn't produce enough Newtype Brainwaves to use it's full potential.

Despite having a strong interpersonal connection with Lalah, who is the strongest Newtype at that time, he doesn't form a deep Newtype connection with her until after her death, and it's possible/implied that Lalah facilitates Char's connection with Amuro. He can detect other strong Newtypes at a distance of dozens or even hundreds of kilometers, but can't consciously determine who they are. Because of this, he spends a lot of time asking if it's Amuro Ray or Lalah Sune, likely trying to focus on them enough to connect if it is them.

Char does have some of the insight/pseudo-mind-reading that Newtypes display, where he's aware of information he has no clear way to gain, but it's not an ability he can control and appears to work at an extremely short range. He does seem to surpass a lot of other Newtypes in interpreting and being aware of the information he gains this way; Kamille's potential as a pilot and a Newtype, Bright's children being both a boy and a girl, when people are being honest or deceiving him, and when Rosammia has her Newtype Psychic Meltdown and Kamille asks what that feeling was, Char explains that energy was released from a misguided mind (referencing Rosammia losing her irrational belief that the AEUG wants to drop colonies/asteroids on the planet and letting go of that persistent terror).

He's capable of clearly hearing Newtype signals being sent out on purpose, something that not all Newtypes are capable of (Kamille hasn't developed to the point where he can understand what Four is trying to tell him, and has to rely on Amuro to pass along the message when she sends out a Shuttle Booster to take him back to space). But he doesn't pick out more general distress/death/danger/come help me signals the way Kamille does, sensing that Fa is in danger while almost entirely on the other side of the moon from her. His sense is, however, strong enough that he senses the departure of Kamille's consciousness at the end of his fight with Scirocco.

Controlling Newtype-specific Weapons: Char doesn't seem to be able to do this effectively until Psychoframe technology is built to boost the strength of his Newtype thought-waves.

Role: Legend

Role Qualities/Attributes:

Sensing people in danger: While Quattro will initially assume this is an extension of his Newtype abilities, this will in fact be one of his Legend qualities. When he's emotionally close to someone he can sense them when they're calling out for help from further away.

Durability: Quattro will be quite a bit more durable naturally, but when he's actively jumping into a fight, especially to help someone or for a cause other than his own enjoyment of battle, the feathers will all become extremely hard and will feel like metal as well as looking like it. He'll also grow patterns of gold and black feathers over his entire body that will molt quickly when he's no longer fighting.

Wings: A small upper set on his upper back/where people traditionally draw angel wings and another set lower/closer to his center of gravity, neither of which are large enough to properly fly with. Also, a much smaller set just over his ears that mostly stay hidden under his flowing bangs and hair, but can/will reflexively move to cover up his eyes if his sunglasses are knocked off. All the feathers are a similar shade of bright gold except the ones on his head, which match his hair.

Machine parts: Hidden on the bottom of his feet, the back and side of his calves under more feather growth, and on his back among the feathers around his wings are thrusters similar to those on his preferred mobile suit. Between the control offered by the flight surfaces of the wings and the variable geometry and nozzle direction/aperture on the thrusters, Char is capable of flying and hovering in much the same way a mobile suit can. When not in use they are all very unobtrusive and hard to see, but the ones on his back will extend out while being used and the ones on his legs become prominent and visible.

Role Reasoning: As Quattro Bajeena, Char is at his most selfless and working his hardest to protect and improve humanity as a whole. He repeatedly expresses distaste in not only the pollution of the Earth, but also the use of weapons of mass destruction or any fighting that endangers civilian populations. He disapproves of the greed, selfishness, and corruption that have brought on the past eight years of intermittent war and mass murder. Quattro believes in building a better future and that the better nature of humanity will ultimately prevail.

While he disapproves of the Federation government as a whole, he believes that they can become enlightened/do better in the future if they move into space and free themselves from being concerned only with the welfare of those who live on Earth.

❥ Personality

Option 2. Choose FOUR-FIVE of the following questions to answer and expand upon. You may choose a fifth question if you feel it is integral to your character's personality. Each answer has a 100-300 word requirement.

OPTION 2 QUESTIONS (PICK 4-5) 100-300 WORD LIMIT EACH:

  • What was the most traumatic experience your character endured? How did this change them?
  • Lalah's death traumatized Quattro, temporarily turning him away from his nine year long pursuit of revenge against the Zabi family. It solidified his already intense rivalry with Amuro into something he could never let go of and he never really gets over it or moves on from her. Every time Quattro senses an unusual presence he wonders if it's Amuro nearby or Lalah reaching to him from beyond the grave. He can't actively reach her on his own, but he can still hear her when she chooses, and he always listens to what she tells him to do. All his other relationships with women are ultimately substitutes or in pursuit of what he had and thought he could have with Lalah.
  • What experience challenged your character's core beliefs? How did they handle this or change from it? Connecting with Amuro is the most abrupt and far-reaching change Quattro goes through, experiencing a connection where he can understand Amuro completely changes his plans. Quattro goes from deciding to create a paradise for Newtypes and viewing Amuro as a weapon too dangerous to live to asking Amuro to join him and fight alongside him. He also decides to follow through with his plan to kill the last living (adult) Zabi. Quattro also mellows out to an extent, and instead of deciding to actively work to lead the world into the next steps, he decides to wait and allow humanity to grow at its own pace.

  • What is the most important and defining relationship(s) in your character's life and why?
  • Lalah is Quattro's first indication that not only do Newtypes exist, he might possibly be able to become one himself. Her ability to perceive the future and the minds of people around her fascinates him, and he asks her to run away to space with him. Their relationship is mainly long distance, but she's the first person Quattro chooses to form any kind of real friendship or emotional connection with since his father died.

Amuro is initially an enemy, though the first time they meet in person, Quattro doesn't realize Amuro is the pilot he is determined to defeat. When Lalah sacrifices herself to prevent Amuro from killing Quattro, it seems like he'll hate Amuro forever, but that fight is also what sets them on the path towards genuine understanding and fondness of one another. In the Zeta Gundam series, Quattro is depressed and usually very serious and downcast, but when Amuro appears, his mood improves and he even makes a few light-hearted jokes and expresses that he's looking forward to being a surrogate father to Katz. As soon as they separate again, Quattro becomes more emotionally withdrawn.

Natalie was Char's lover and the mother of his unborn child, and her death sends him into a downward spiral and eventually causes him to leave Axis and Neo Zeon to return to Earthsphere seeking Lalah. Char has other lovers after Natalie, but he never has an intimate emotional relationship after her.
  • What is a headcanon (or two) you feel strongly about and that you prefer playing your character with? How is this supported in canon and why do you think it benefits the character's story? When Newtypes connect, they take on some of the personality traits and viewpoints of the other person that align with some part of themselves or something they're seeking. This is seen mutually in every major Newtype connection pair to some extent, and even appears to be weaponized by Scirocco to force others to share his views.

Amuro views Quattro as his main enemy prior to his fight with Lalah, but after connecting with her he considers the Zabis his primary enemy (Char's enemies during the time Lalah knew him) and that they should be on the same side (Lalah believed Newtypes shouldn't fight each other). Lalah goes from being willing to kill Amuro and anyone else on Quattro's behalf to choosing to sacrifice herself rather than kill either of them.

When Amuro and Quattro connect, it reinforces the negative traits they both share and his guilt over his part in Lalah's death, as well as some of his more pessimistic outlook. Quattro also experiences that negative trait reinforcement, but also Amuro's general faith in humanity and his affection and positive view of the people he's close to on White Base.

Newtypes improve/awaken more quickly and to a higher extent when around other newtypes. There's good evidence in the fact that Char shows his first newtype ability use around Lalah, and then appears to remain mostly dormant for several years until he has to fight against Amuro, who is an emergent and stronger Newtype. Quattro also shows that his newtype abilities become refined over the course of Zeta Gundam; by mid-series, he's much more able to determine who he is sensing instead of just a general feeling of a strange presence, and at the end he's aware of what happens to Kamille despite the distance between them.

  • What is your character's safespace? When do they feel the most settled and comfortable? When do they feel confident and relaxed? In a mobile suit cockpit is his safespace because he's hidden from view and protected by the mobile suit's armor and also able to move around and defend himself. Quattro is most confident and relaxed when he has his eyes and most of his upper face concealed, and at this point in his life does so with large sunglasses and wearing his hair longer. He's very uncomfortable allowing anyone he's not extremely close to to see his face, but he tolerates it when he's wearing his pilot suit (read: space suit). Even though there's no longer a practical reason to keep his face hidden, Char feels very uncomfortable when he's not hiding his eyes.
